Abstract

This community service program addresses limited access among senior high school students to practical civil engineering learning due to schools’ resource constraints. The program aims to improve basic structural literacy while strengthening soft skills in collaboration, communication, and leadership, and to stimulate interest in pursuing civil engineering studies. The novelty lies in a low-cost, integrated intervention model that combines outreach, training on load–strength concepts, hands-on “spaghetti bridge” design practice, a competition, and a campus tour within a single end-to-end sequence. The method included coordination with partner schools, delivery of materials and demonstrations, team mentoring during prototype construction, load testing and judging, and evaluation through observation and a satisfaction questionnaire. The results indicate that participants gained a better understanding of structural principles, were able to work effectively in teams, and perceived the program as beneficial; therefore, the program is suitable for replication as a contextual, project-based STEM education strategy. In addition, the program expanded interschool networks and provided authentic project-based learning experiences. The program supports SDG 4 and offers an alternative pathway for fostering engineering interest in partner schools.
